I woke up on a sailboat this morning. My sailboat. My new home. It’s a complete mess. I am finally living my childhood dream. After nearly a decade of saving and planning, the perfect opportunity presented itself. And that never happens. Carpe freakin’ diem.Â
Every day I am amazed that I found such a great partner. My husband is my ride-or-die and he is a huge reason this voyage is happening. It’s a lot easier to sail halfway around the world with your best friend than all alone.Â
I’m creating a mini ocean awareness and ocean literacy campaign with the occasional Substack update and YouTube videos. By sharing my adventure and my love of the sea, I hope to tell a story that invites people to a world we rarely see or have access to, from the High Seas to coral reefs, seal haulouts and rugged coastlines, and whatever amazing marine ecosystems I encounter along the way. I hope to connect people with the big blue wet thing, to show everyone that it’s both full of wild creatures who think and feel, and also that the ocean touches all of us every day; it produces the most oxygen, offering us every third breath, it regulates the global climate and water cycle, and it provides food, livelihoods, and a place of worship and joy to people all over the globe.
I’m Sailing for Sustainability because I hope to inspire people to act in ocean-positive ways, not just as individuals but through collective action.
Here is my first YouTube: Day 1
Also, if you’re thinking of a career or looking for volunteer work focused on the ocean, you can check out my podcast: Coral Kelp & Community. Each episode features a new guest in a different field saving the ocean, from nonprofits and volunteers, to hobbyists and surfers, and even people hundreds of miles away from the sea. Some work is ocean-adjacent, which I share because it’s a good reminder that everything is connected. The first two seasons are available on your favourite podcast app. There will be a brief hiatus during my sailing voyage… and by brief, I mean like, probably 6 months.Â
Everything I am putting online is something I wish I had when I was young, trying to find my way in the world.Â

Hi Tara,
I loved reading about your new adventure! I, too, used to live on a sailboat, and there’s something truly special about waking up to the marina view, knowing the open water is your backyard. I’m so inspired by Sailing for Sustainability and the mission you’re crafting with every mile.
Your commitment to ocean literacy and awareness resonates deeply with me, as my own blog, Type Two Fun, explores similar themes of sustainable living and nature immersion. I’m genuinely rooting for you and look forward to potentially collaborating—our work aligns beautifully, and I think together, we could amplify these messages in powerful ways.
Here’s to smooth seas and impactful stories!
So cool! I’m looking forward to following along. Go you!
